What happened
Researchers measured about 50 blood and spinal-fluid markers before and for years after autologous hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation in 24 people with severe multiple sclerosis. Many inflammation-related markers and neurofilament light chain decreased over time. In spinal fluid, GFAP and IL-7 instead increased. Blood and spinal-fluid changes often differed. This is a new analysis of samples from the earlier HALT-MS study, not a new trial of treatment effectiveness.
What this means for people with MS
The findings help researchers understand biological changes after AHSCT. Biomarker changes alone do not show that an individual patient will improve, establish myelin repair, or change who should receive this intensive procedure. The paper does not establish access in Greece.
