Bavisant / BRAVEinMS
A substance studied in the laboratory to see whether it can help restore myelin, the protective coating around nerves. For multiple sclerosis it has only been studied in human cells and in animals; there is no registered study in people with the condition. It is not a treatment anyone can take today.
Researchers are studying bavisant, which blocks the histamine H3 receptor, to see whether it can support myelin repair.
Not tested in people
Research so far is in laboratory cells or animal models.
Effects have been reported in human cells and animal models. No study in people with MS is registered, so patient benefit is unknown.
This is early research, not a treatment people with MS can use. It has not been tested in patients.
After testing more than 1,500 existing compounds, researchers found that bavisant showed signs of myelin repair and nerve protection in several models. These included human cells in the laboratory and mice containing some human cells.
